Following finishing the CNC work on the Walnut form of Mars, I began the long and tedious process of sanding down the form to get the surfaces nice and smooth ready for oiling. This was a case of little and often as it was a meticulous task o getting into all of the crevices of the form. The CNC did leave quite a few ridges and marks from the tool as well as burn marks which needed to be got rid of. I began with a coarse 60 grt sandpaper before moving onto 100 grit and then 180 and 240 grit, finishing with wire wool the give the surface a shine. Below you can see the resulting surface.
All that is left to do now is to oil the form to bring out the beautiful grain of the walnut.
